DAVID CARSON

Emerging in the 1990s, Carson gained recognition as the art director of Ray Gun magazine, where he challenged traditional typography and layout rules. Mission
The aim of this project was to create an adaptive digital design layout that effectively communicates the article detailing David Carson’s journey as a graphic designer. The webpage was designed to provide a consistent and engaging user experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices while reflecting Carson’s influential and experimental approach to design. Layout, typography, imagery, and content hierarchy were carefully adapted for each screen size to maintain readability and visual impact. By applying responsive design principles, the final outcome ensures users can seamlessly explore Carson’s career, achievements, and creative legacy across a variety of digital platforms.
Vision
The vision for this design was to create a bold and engaging digital article that reflects David Carson’s unconventional and expressive approach to graphic design. Inspired by Carson’s experimental use of typography, layering, and visual disruption, the layout combines oversized type, overlapping imagery, and dynamic composition to capture the energy and individuality of his work. The use of musical notation and fluid graphic elements symbolises creativity, intuition, and movement, reinforcing key themes explored throughout the article. The design was developed as an adaptive webpage experience, ensuring that Carson’s story and design philosophy remain visually impactful and accessible across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
